Lamai — second beach town, more relaxed

Lamai, south of Chaweng on the east coast, is Samui's second-biggest beach town: a long sandy bay with a more laid-back, slightly cheaper feel than Chaweng, though it still has bars and a small nightlife strip. The southern end of the beach can have rocks and stronger surf in season. Nearby are the famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai ("Grandfather and Grandmother") rock formations — naturally shaped rocks resembling genitalia, a long-running photo stop. Lamai has a popular walking-street night market on set evenings. It draws a mix of couples, long-stayers, and budget-to-midrange travellers.
