Maenam, Choeng Mon, and Bang Rak
These north-coast areas are quieter alternatives to the east-coast strips. Maenam is a long, shallow, undeveloped beach popular with families, long-stayers, and budget travellers; it has a relaxed village and a weekly walking street. Choeng Mon, on the northeast tip near the airport, is a small, calm, protected bay with upscale resorts and a sheltered swimming beach, good for families. Bang Rak ("Big Buddha Beach") sits beside the Big Buddha temple and its pier; the water is shallower and the beach more functional than scenic, but it is convenient for the airport and speedboats to Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao.
