Food and night markets

Samui's food spans cheap, excellent Thai street food to high-end resort dining. Southern Thai cooking is bold and spicy — expect fiery curries, fresh Gulf seafood, and dishes like khao mok (Thai biryani). The cheapest, most authentic eating is at local markets and roadside stalls, especially in Nathon and Maenam. Rotating evening walking-street night markets are a core experience: Fisherman's Village (Bophut), Lamai, Maenam, Chaweng, and Nathon each have their own market night, with food stalls, fresh fruit, grilled seafood, and crafts. Tap water is not safe to drink — use bottled or filtered water, which is cheap and everywhere. Vegetarian and Western food is widely available in tourist areas.
