Health and medical care

Samui has solid private healthcare for an island its size. Bangkok Hospital Samui (near Chaweng) is the main international-standard private hospital, with English-speaking staff, emergency care, and direct-billing arrangements with many travel insurers; Thai International Hospital and Samui International Hospital (both Chaweng area) and a public hospital in Nathon are alternatives. Pharmacies are widespread and sell many medications over the counter. Travel insurance is strongly advised — private care is good but expensive, and serious cases may need evacuation to Bangkok. Common health issues are sunburn, dehydration, stomach upsets, motorbike injuries, and, in the rainy season, mosquito-borne illness (dengue) — use repellent. Thailand's emergency numbers: 1669 for ambulance, 191 for police.
